Maybe you just found a perfect home and want to move in, but there is a small problem: the residents before you were smokers so your new place smells like an ashtray. It’s not easy to fix this problem, but with some patience and hard work, your new home will have sweet and clean air like how it should be. These following tips will show you how to remove cigarette smell from every room in your house.
Clean the Air inside Your Home
Fresh air is always good for you, so you’d better open up all windows in your home to let some fresh air into the place. You would notice, although the breeze of fresh air won't make the cigarette smell disappear, it would certainly help. What would really help you is that if you install several air purifier units in your house. Although the air purification process may take some to finish, it will end with a great result, so you’d better to have one installed in your favorite room.
Clean the Ceilings and Walls
To clean the cigarette smell it’s important to clean the entire home, especially your ceiling, as it’s the place where the cigarette smoke mostly retained. So don’t just clean the walls and the floors; if you want to get the best result, clean your ceilings as well.
To do the job, you need to use the correct household cleaning products, the ones that contain glycol and ammonia – two key ingredients to neutralize cigarette smell. Be careful though, these are some harsh chemicals we’re talking aboout, so you have to keep your children and pets to stay out of the room where you work with the chemicals.
After the cleaning process is done and the surfaces dry, try to smell the walls. If there’s no smell, that’s great, but be sure to check again after two or three days; because maybe the chemical smell masks the smoke. If after several days the cigarette smell come again, then you need to repaint your walls and ceilings to eliminate the problem. Before repainting, apply a sealant first to the walls and ceilings you need to repaint, as the sealant will prevent the cigarette smell to leak out into the new paint.
Clean Your Rugs
Your carpets should also have their shared of blame for your cigarette smell problem, so you shoud clean it first. Use a rug cleaner, a strong one, spread it generously and vacuuum the carpet thoroughly, and then after the carpet dry, you smell the carpet to look for cigarette smell. If you still smell cigarette smoke in your carpet, then you may owe your carpet a deep cleaning, better to hire some professionals hand to do that.
Clean Doors and Floors
For your doors and floors that are made of woods, better use a wood-friendly cleaner. Carefully mop your floor thoroughly, and make sure regularly to change the water, and if it’s needed, hand-scrub every corner and edge of the floor. To achieve the best result, clean the door frames and baseboards as well.
Clean Blinds and Drapes
Remove all of the blinds and drapes in the room you want to clean, also you may need to dry-clean the drapes. If the drapes could be washed, use hot water to wash them but before add one cup of vinegar on the water (full load) as it’s a great natural neutralizer and cleaner.
To clean your non-wooden blinds, you can place your blinds inside your bathtub, and then fill it with a mix of hot water and vinegar. Let the blinds stay in the bathtub for about 15 minutes and then gently scrub them by using a scrub brush, preferably a fine one, and after it you can dry the blinds.
Clean Mirrors and Windows
Same as before, you could use water and vinegar to clean your mirrors and windows; don’t forget to clean the corners as well, and the window frames and sill too.
