Ants are small majestic creatures, most people don’t pick ants as their least favorite small creatures, they probably choose spiders, flies, or mosquitoes. But if ants start to invade your place, that’s another story, they need to get rid of fast before it’s all too late. So if your house or room suffers from ant invasion right now, you might want to look at these tips on how to get rid of ants, naturally of course!
How to identify ants
It’s all start with identifying the type of ants invading your place, as there are plenty of types out there, each with different behaviors and food preferences. Those parameters are useful to find the most effective remedy for your ant invasion and to prevent another invasion in the future to happen.
This article covers two types of ants: the odorous house-ants and carpenter ants, along with the specific treatment on how to manage their invasion.
1. THE PESKY ODOROUS HOUSE ANTS
If you store delicious sweets in your kitchen, you should be careful with this little buggers as they can steal your delicacy in no time. It’s hard to get rid of this ants, as they have a habit to always leave a trace of chemical pheromone on their track. If you are succeeding in exterminating some of them, don’t be happy just yet, as others will just follow the trail left by their fallen comrades that leads to your sweet jar. Now the final solution is clear, the entire ant colony must be purged, and you may feel bad for doing it, but that’s how the solution works.
Here’s how you’ll gonna do it: as you notice a small squadron of ants, sponge them along with the area around them with soap water in order to eradicate the pheromone trail. After that, find out from which spot they’re able to go into your home; and after it, carefully place your very own homemade ant bait at the entry points of said spot.
Homemade bait you can use for house ants
You need two things ready, Borax and powdered sugar; in case you haven’t known, Borax can be used to kill those pesky odorous house-ants, while powdered sugar is used to attract them. It’s very easy to make, this homemade ant bait can be made just by mixing one part of borax with three parts of powdered sugar. After done mixing, fill it into a tiny container, like a bottle cap, and place the mixture as close as possible to the spot where ants enter your house. If you detect another trail of ants in your house, place another mixture container directly in their path as it will prevent them to travel freely around your home.
Don’t be tempted to kill the ants right away as they’ll bring the bait back into their nest, that includes the borax as well as the sugar. The borax powder will do its job tremendously by exterminate the entire colony; the more ants carry back the bait, the faster the ant colony will be perished.
2. THE AGILE CARPENTER ANTS
Carpenter ants can be found commonly around homes located in wooded areas. Unlike the Odorous house-ants, they don’t possess the similar habit of bringing back their bait to their nest, that’s why you better kill ‘em at its source. That means you need to do an extra work of finding their nest or nests; don’t use the same sugar/borax trick, they’ll just munch it on the spot.
How to find their nest
If your house situated next to the wood, there’s a great chance it will get visited by carpenter ants. They usually live outdoors though, but very close to your house and sooner or later will go to your house looking for food and water.
To find their nest, first you need to search for little piles of fine sawdust, as the piles are the leftover of the wood they’d chewed. Usually carpenter ants have their nests located in the moist wood that can be found in your house decks and foundations, wood piles, trees, breach between boards, and so on.
Next, you need to look for the entry points where the ants are able to enter your house, then from there just backtrack them to their nests. Don’t forget to secure those entry points afterwards, by seal them up, or repair those holes to avoid future security breach.
Natural carpenter ant repellant
To kill the carpenter ants, you could use the Diatomaceous Earth, an organic and natural remedy that it’s made of small remains of algae-type plants.
The Diatomaceous Earth is a small dust lethal for ants, as it’s actually has microscopic edges that is very sharp and able to cut the body of ants easily, eventually killing them. If the carpenter ants ingested the lethal dust, their inside will get shred; pretty gory, eh? There are several types of Diatomaceous Earth, so you should pick the one which is food-grade used for pest control not the one used for swimming pools as it has different substances.
Don’t worry, food-grade Diatomaceous Earth is perfectly safe to use and wont harm your pets and kids; just sprinkle them around your the infected area and wait for it to work. For it would work effectively, the Diatomaceous Earth should be directly injected into the ants nest; you can use a syringe or medicine dropper and should be re-injected after rains come down.
Hopefully these tips will give helpful knowledge on how to get rid of ants in your room or house; ants are sturdy little creatures, don’t give up on the war with them! And if you suffer from mosquito invasion, you can try these tips!
